The defense team for former President Jair Bolsonaro announced Thursday (Sep. 11) it will appeal the sentence handed down by the first panel of the Supreme Court.

The justices sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison for the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, aggravated damage caused by violence and serious threat, and deterioration of listed heritage sites.

In a statement, lawyers Celso Vilardi and Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno said they would file appeals against the decision, including “at international level.”

They described the sentences as “absurdly excessive and disproportionate.”
