Syracuse, N.Y. -- A long-time ACC referee has reportedly quit over how a replay was handled by the league’s command center during last week’s Syracuse-UConn game.
ESPN reported that veteran football official Gary Patterson, who has been officiating in the league since 2002, quit his position following the game.
The critical sequence began with 1:02 remaining in the first half, after Steve Angeli was hit by a UConn defender, forcing an incomplete pass on a 1st-and-10.
About 25 seconds passed before the second-down snap.
Angeli’s next pass was also incomplete and a flag was thrown on the play, likely for a high hit to the quarterback.
