The Campbell County Fire Department fought a few decently-sized fires this week that burned a combined 247 acres.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a grass fire south of Gillette on Highway 59, just north of the Hitching Post mobile home park and Victoria Road.

The Donkey Creek Fire burned about 54 acres. A Set notice was issued for the Sleepy Hollow area Thursday afternoon as windy conditions contributed to the spread of the fire that was moving in that direction.

At about 1:45 p.m., the fire department lifted the Set notice because firefighters had stopped the fire’s progress and conditions had improved.
