AUSTIN, Minn.- KIMT Political Consultant Rayce Hardy says incidents like the shooting of Charlie Kirk are examples of an increase in political violence at a rate the U.S. hasn't seen since the 1960's and 70's.

Hardy says looking at recent examples such as the assassination of Melissa and Mark Hortman, the attempted assassination of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and the attempts on President Donald Trump's life during the 2024 election it is clear there has been an uptick in political violence over the past decade.

He says a lot of that can be attributed to the increasing perception of politics as a zero sum game, where in order to win, the other side needs to lose.

Hardy says that is reflected in how public discourse online and offline responds to these incidents.
