ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The race for Georgia’s next state schools superintendent is drawing a growing list of candidates — and sparking big debates over the future of education.
Mesha Mainor, a former state representative, officially entered the race.
“Right now, you could ask anybody who is the current state school superintendent. Do a research project, and people are not going to know, right,” Mainor said.
Mainor is no stranger to controversy. She switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2023 after clashing with fellow lawmakers over school choice and police funding. That decision cost her politically. Running as a Republican in her deep-blue district, she received just 16% of the vote.
