The University of Connecticut announced they are cancelling this year's First Night basketball event at Gampel Pavilion.

UConn said the celebration - which is set to take place in October - won't happen due to ongoing renovations at Gampel Pavilion. The renovations aim to "enhance the gameday experience," the university said.

First Night is a free, student-focused event that celebrates the men's and women's basketball teams ahead of the official start of the season.

Last year , the event kicked off with a block party on Jim Calhoun Way. There were food trucks, carnival games, photo booths, a live DJ and more.
