PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (WMBD) -- Peoria Heights Mayor Matt Wigginton announced he plans to veto a municipal tax on groceries that was recently passed by the village's board of trustees.
On Sept. 2, a 1% grocery tax was passed five to one by the village board of trustees, Wigginton said. This would have replaced the statewide 1% tax on groceries that was repealed by Gov. JB Pritzker on Jan. 1, 2026.
In a Facebook post, Mayor Matt Wigginton announced he plans to notify the board of his plans to veto the tax at the next regular meeting on Sept. 16.
"I have the utmost respect for my colleagues on the Village Board of Trustees, but I must act to protect household essentials from new taxes," Wigginton said.
Wigginton said the mayor has had the authority to veto the board's ordinances since 191
