Retired officer speaks after attacker sentenced: 'Thought I was going to die'

For the first time, we're hearing from the Cincinnati police officer who survived a brutal attack when a man tried to kill him at Sawyer Point in 2023.

A few days ago, the man who attacked officer Terry McGuffey was sentenced to at least 22 years in prison. Advertisement

"I thought I was going to die that day," McGuffey said. "Nick, my good buddy, he saved me that morning. Because I didn't know how much more I could take."

In the early morning of July 23 2023, McGuffey responded to a 911 call of a man exposing himself to people at Sawyer Point.

"He went from answering questions that I was asking him to up the step and on top of me. And he was 6-foot-5, so I couldn't' keep him away," McGuffey said.

Brandon Claiborne knocked McGuffey out and dug his fingers into his eyes.
