Riverside and Newman both had strong defensive showings in a Week 2 nondistrict matchup on Friday at Michael Lupin Field.

No points were scored until the end of the second quarter when Riverside senior quarterback Brock Bourgeois found the end zone on a quarterback sneak. Newman scored a pair of second-half touchdowns and was within six points in the closing minutes, but Riverside held on for a 19-13 win.

Newman senior quarterback Jake Randle led a scoring drive and found freshman Jake Irving for a 9-yard receiving touchdown to cut the lead to six. The Newman offense was unable to deliver again, as a turnover on downs allowed Riverside to run out the clock with less than a minute to go.
