Ijust finished reading “Who is Government,” a compilation of essays edited by Michael Lewis about the real mission of the federal government and the people who make it function, aka the Civil Service. The profiles of eight unsung civil service stalwarts doing the job of providing essential services to the people of this country is both inspirational and revealing. These eight represent over 2 million public servants that go to work every day to ensure the mission of the federal government, namely providing services to the people living in this country and providing expert advice to policymakers. They also reminded me of the dozens of like-minded colleagues with whom I served during my 15-year post-military career in Washington, DC.
