Australians are dying from dementia more than any other cause, with advocates warning the number of people with the condition could exceed 1 million without government intervention.

Dementia accounted for almost 17,400 deaths in 2023, equivalent to almost one in 10 of all deaths, according to a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare .
