WILLIAMSPORT — The cleanup of thousands of gallons of an oily substance that leaked from a tank in a closed wastewater treatment facility is nearing completion, the state Department of Environment Protection says.

As of Thursday, most of the 11,430 gallons released from a tank at the Eureka Resources facility on Second Street on Aug. 17 had been recovered, the agency said.

The facility processed wastewater from natural gas fracking operations.

The preliminary recovery estimates include all sections of the building and the city’s storm water system.

Some of the oily substance flowed out of the building, into two storm water drains and went through the Hepburn Street pump station along the dike and into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
