Road user charges for electric vehicles are now all but certain – the only questions are how much new taxes will cost EV drivers, and how they will be applied.

Two models are being considered by the federal government: a tax targeting EV drivers only, which is being promoted by Australia’s peak automobile lobby or – less likely – a complete rewrite of taxes for drivers of both combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles.
