A newly elected Orangeburg city councilman says the state prohibition against dual office holding doesn't apply to him.
"We're appointed by the governor, and it doesn't bring dual office holding," Jordan Hawkins said.
"I had attorneys and all that look at that stuff before. I figured people would start bringing that up. That's fine," he said.
Hawkins won the Orangeburg City Council District 1 seat on Tuesday by defeating longtime incumbent Richard F. Stroman.
Hawkins is a law enforcement officer with the state Department of Natural Resources.
The S.C. Municipal Association reports that the state constitution contains two separate provisions that use identical language: "No person may hold two offices of honor or profit at the same time."
