Not even three months ago, I wrote about the lives stolen through political violence in Minnesota. I’m horrified that it’s necessary to do so again. The shooting and murder of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University represents another shocking example of someone attempting to settle a political argument with force. How can we say we live in a free nation if we risk physical harm or death for the words we speak?

Mr. Kirk didn’t deserve the targeted and cold-blooded assassination that ended his life. His wife and two children didn’t deserve to lose a husband and a father. By the time you read this column, there may be more information about the shooter and the motivations behind the attack. But no facts will justify anything about Wednesday’s events.
