While drought conditions this summer caused slow growth of many crops, some area wineries are looking forward to a flavorful harvest, while others said the conditions created additional challenges for their grape crop.
“The season started off cold, wet and more wet. Bud break was delayed due to weather, and an overabundance of rain,” said Scott Kuyon, general manager and winemaker at Deer Run Winery, 3772 West Lake Rd., Geneseo. “Disease pressure and weed pressure increased early on due to the persistent rain events, leading to a trying early season.”
