Emergency Info BC alerted residents there was no tsunami threat ahead following a M7.4 earthquake that shook the east coast of Russia Friday night.

At 7:37 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service (NWS) U.S. Tsunami Warning System reported a M7.4 earthquake had hit Kamchatka Russia.

“Last night’s earthquake (M7.4) was most likely an aftershock of the M8.8 earthquake in the same area in late July,” John Cassidy, seismologist with Earthquakes Canada told CHEK.

Following the report of the earthquake, a Tsunami Threat was issued by the NWS for the Non-U.S./Canada Pacific region.

A Tsunami Threat is the first of four stages in monitoring a tsunami, followed by a watch, advisory and finally, a warning.
