TWIN FALLS — As a new mother was sentenced this month for not reporting a death to authorities after dropping off a dead baby in a safe haven box in eastern Idaho, another mom is reaching out to ensure newborns are safe.

Angel Nevaeh Newberry, 18, of Twin Falls, was charged in November with felony failing to report the death of her baby to officials and dropped it at a Safe Haven box in Blackfoot, where care workers who responded said the baby was cold to the touch.

Court records say the placenta was still attached to the newborn.

The charges were amended on Sept. 4 to a misdemeanor, and Newberry was handed down a suspended sentence with probation. After spending two days in jail, she posted a $10,000 surety bond. She must also perform 10 hours of community service and take an alcohol e
