CHARDON, Ohio — When Geauga County held its first court sessions in 1808, justice was carried out in a one-room log cabin outfitted with split-rail benches and rough-hewn floors. More than two centuries later, the county is preparing to open a major addition to its iconic courthouse on Chardon Square, a project officials say honors the past while meeting the demands of the future.
The $21 million expansion, which started in December 2023, doubles the size of the historic courthouse, adds secure space for inmates and judges and makes the building fully accessible.
Commissioner James Dvorak, a retired bricklayer and stonemason, said the project reflects both preservation and progress.
