Flags in Illinois and across the country will fly at half-staff through sunset on Sunday in memory of conservative activist and Chicago-area native Charlie Kirk , who was shot and killed Wednesday while speaking at an event on a Utah university campus.

President Donald Trump ordered flags at the White House and all public buildings and grounds, along with all military posts, naval stations and naval vessels throughout the United States to fly at half-staff "as a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk" on Wednesday.

The order expires at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14.

Flags in Illinois were already set to fly at half-staff Thursday to honor Patriot Day, and in remembrance of those killed on 9/11, as ordered by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
