The World Fireworks Championship due to take place tonight in Blackpool has been cancelled due to a lightning storm.

Organisers made the announcement at about 8.30pm, just as the event was due to begin. Tonight's show was the first of three rounds due to take place in the coming weeks.

In a statement VistBlackpool said: "Unfortunately we have had to cancel tonight’s round of World Fireworks Championship Blackpool. The lightning storm made it too unsafe to set up for the show. We hope to see you all for the next round on Saturday, September 27."
