BISBEE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man who found himself trapped in an open mine in Bisbee was rescued Saturday morning.

At about 1 a.m., Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (CCSO SAR) team was dispatched to the Lavender Pit , an abandoned open-pit copper mine turned tourist attraction, after a man called to report he was stuck at the bottom of the mine.

Condemned roads made it impossible for mine security to get to the man, so an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter flew out of Tucson to assist, according to CCSO SAR.

The helicopter arrived around 2 a.m. and conducted a patrol flight before landing at the scenic overlook to pick up Search and Rescue personnel.
