GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The community came together despite the rain on Saturday morning to participate in the 22nd Annual Mayors' Grand River Cleanup.

The event began at 8:15 a.m. at Sixth Street Park and was held by the Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund and the West Michigan Environmental Council (WMEAC).

To kick off the event, Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand, former Mayor George Heartwell and other local elected officials gathered at the park to discuss the importance of protecting West Michigan's waterways.

"It's great to see people out. It's great to see the tradition continue," LaGrand said. "And you know, at this moment, it's really great to see community-building activities where people are just going out doing good."
