Driver Corey Peabody walked away uninjured Saturday morning when the U-9 Unlimited Hydroplane blew over during the first heat of the races on east Mission Bay.

Peabody was traveling around 160 mph in the northern turn of the course when he hit a pair of rollers.

“I recovered from the first, but I drifted out and got into the spray of Dave Villwock’s boat when the second hit and my boat went up and over,” said Peabody. “All the safety equipment worked fine and the safety team helped get me out without a problem.”

It was the second time that Peabody had blown over during his Unlimited Hydroplane career. His previous blowover came during the 2022 season in Madison, Ind.

Peabody’s damaged boat was withdrawn from the competition and the day’s first heat was abandoned and will be rerun Sunda
