LAWRENCE, Kan. —
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says five people were transported to area hospitals after a two-vehicle crash at 4:45 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 59 and North 1100 Road south of Lawrence.
According to preliminary information, deputies determined a car was headed west on N 1100, and the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. A southbound car on U.S. 59 then struck the westbound car.
Three people in the westbound car suffered injuries -two of them with serious injuries. Two people in the southbound car were transported from the scene to an area hospital with serious injuries as well.
Deputies shut down the southbound lanes for an extended period of time for medics to extricate the patients and to investigate the crash scene.
