Today is the 120th birthday of the Tulsa World.
On this day in 1905, before Oklahoma was named a state, right below the words “Tulsa Daily World” was a banner:
“Tulsa, Chosen Home of Prosperity and Opportunity, is a Busy City in a Busy Universe.”
I’ve thought about that sentence a lot since I walked into this newsroom 26 years ago.
I believe that sentence still to be true.
Since 1992, the Tulsa World has stood alone as the only daily newspaper. The bylines on top of our stories that explain this complex world in simple terms are people who are your neighbors, most who have spent decades serving you.
One of the first marketing slogans for the Tulsa World in the early days was “Appealing to the people who think rather than talk.”
