After the first televised debate in the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s race 10 days ago, candidate Edwin Shorty e-mailed supporters to say he had big news.
Shorty, the 2nd City Constable in Algiers, declared victory in the hourlong WWL-TV debate, adding that he’d picked up the lone endorsement from Crime Fighters of Louisiana, a victims’ advocacy group. He also ran the race’s first TV ad during the NFL season opener on NBC, which was the same night as the debate, where he appeared alongside his most prominent supporter, U.S. Rep. Troy Carter.
The constable’s email celebrated the “massive momentum” his campaign built during a pivotal week in the contest against the race’s front-runner, former interim police Superintendent Michelle Woodfork, and embattled incumbent Sheriff Susan Hutson.
