NYACK – The man in the red bandana over his nose and mouth emerged from the debris and smoke of the 78th-floor sky lobby of the World Trade Center’s South Tower on 9/11.

The building had just been hit by hijacked United Airlines Flight 175, and those in the doomed skyscraper gathered in shock and fear. There seemed to be no way out of the burning South Tower. However, the man in the red bandana, later identified as Welles Remy Crowther, calmly led three groups to a stairway so that they could escape.
