Regarding Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt's op-ed " How Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' transforms Medicaid " (Sept. 10): Schmitt accuses Democrats of relying on “scare tactics, not facts” when talking about the bill. Regarding claims that the bill would reduce Medicaid benefits for the needy, Schmitt states “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

What he does not acknowledge, however, is that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the bill will reduce funding of Medicaid by about $1 billion over 10 years and increase the number of Americans without health insurance by 10 million people. The main source of decreased Medicaid funds will be a reduction in the number of Americans on Medicaid due to the institution of work requirements.
