Tokyo: When she won her heat Torrie Lewis cut a smile and a sidewards glance. She had broken her own national record but she knew something we didn’t. She knew she’d do it because she’s been going much faster than this.

In fact, she was mildly disappointed she didn’t go much quicker. She thought she’d break 11 seconds for the 100m.

If she was happy-sad about winning but not running faster than she thought she would in the heat, she was just flat out dirty with her effort in the semi-final.

Lewis finished fifth in 11.14seconds, clearly outside not only her expected time but evidently, her expectations of making the final and becoming the first Australian woman ever to make the 100m final at a world championships.
