Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde. Greater Manchester Police said they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Joining the boxing world in paying tribute to Hatton, former Clones fighter McGuigan – who won gold for Northern Ireland at the 1978 Commonwealth Games – hailed the fighter’s legacy.

“I’m absolutely devastated to hear the news of the passing of Ricky Hatton,” McGuigan wrote on X.

"He was a man of the people and a spectacular fighter. A great man inside the ring and a wonderful man outside of it. RIP Ricky, my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”

Hatton won world titles at light-welterweight and welterweight and his all-action style made him one of the most popular fighters in the first decade of the new century.
