Auburn University held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for its new air traffic control tower at the airport.
Joined by officials from the cities of Auburn and Opelika, the University broke ground on the 109 foot tower that will be complete with a 360 degree observation deck.
The $7.2 million project is said to enhance safety measures and operational efficiency at the Auburn University Regional Airport while helping alleviate air traffic congestion.
With the large number of student training flights from Auburn’s School of Aviation, as well as increased military, recreational and business travelers, Auburn University officials say they have seen record air traffic activity.
The construction of the tower is an ongoing effort to bring a more controlled airport environment to Auburn.
