CITY OF NEWPORT, Ky (WXIX) -The City of Newport announced Thursday that they have assumed ownership of the Purple People Bridge following a unanimous vote by the bridge’s company board of directors.
“The Purple People Bridge is a vital part of the area’s active transportation system for the entire region. Newport is committed to preserving, enhancing, and maximizing the bridge’s potential as a shared regional asset for generations to come,” added Hayden.
Twenty years ago, the Southbank Partners created the Bridge Company, a nonprofit that took over the bridge to save it from demolition, but Newport city leaders felt the bridge needed to be owned by a public entity to make it easier to get funding.
