EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says an outside agency is investigating an incident that lead to the death of an inmate at the Vanderburgh County Jail.

Officials say on Saturday, September 6, the inmate was taken to the hospital after improvising a “ligature device” and tied it around their neck.

According to a release, jail officers and medical staff responded once they were made aware, and attempted CPR and used an AED to help the inmate.

The inmate was taken to the hospital, and put on life support, which they were removed from on Friday.

The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation with the assistance of the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office.

The name of the inmate was not released.
