Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry looks on during his team's game against North Carolina State at Lane Stadium.

A Virginia Tech football coach cannot be sandblasted at home by Old Dominion if he expects to remain employed in Blacksburg. Brent Pry found out the hard way on Sunday. He was fired as the head coach of the Hokies. USA TODAY Sports has more:

"Virginia Tech has fired fourth-year coach Brent Pry, fewer than 24 hours after an embarrassing 45-26 loss to Old Dominion dropped the Hokies to 0-3 on the young season. The school announced Pry's firing on Sunday, Sept. 14.

"Pry, 55, will likely be the second coach to be fired in the Bowl Subdivision. UCLA fired DeShaun Foster earlier in the day on Sept. 14. Once rare, such early-season firings have become more prevalent in the past decade. Saturday’s loss was the last straw for a tenure that briefly showed promise heading into last season but ends at 16-24 overall and 10-13 in the ACC."

Brent Pry will go back onto the defensive coordinator market. He was a good coordinator at Penn State before taking the Virginia Tech job.

Virginia Tech needs a proven head coach to resurrect a program which has fallen on very hard times in the decade since school icon Frank Beamer retired. There is a lot of pressure on the administration to raise money and compete in the NIL era, which has crushed the Hokies in recent years.
