Nathan James Sumpter received a two-year, eight-month sentence after brutally beating and strangling his child’s mother in front of their two-year-old.

A California man was sentenced Thursday to two years and eight months in state prison for a brutal attack on the mother of his young child. Nathan James Sumpter, 28, was sentenced in Butte County Superior Court after pleading no contest to felony charges of assault likely to cause great bodily injury and dissuading a witness, as well as a misdemeanor for violating a restraining order.

The case, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, began on the evening of July 8, 2025. Sumpter went to the victim’s home in violation of a restraining order.
