BLOOMINGTON ( 25News Now ) - At Miller Park Zoo, staff is helping to hatch a super generation of butterflies that will migrate thousands of miles.
Right now, the zoo has about 52 Monarch butterflies in various stages of their life cycles. These insects are found by employees or the public, then turned over to the zoo for safekeeping. When the butterflies grow up in the zoo’s Monarch Manor Habitat, they are kept safe from predators.
After reaching adulthood, the Monarchs are tagged before being released into the wild.
“It’s so exciting. Honestly, when my instructor Sophie and I get to [release them] together, it is the brightest part of our day. We are all sunshine, rainbows, Christmas morning excited,” said Julia Benzel, the zoo’s education manager.
