STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Sunday, Staten Islanders celebrated Mexican Independence Day at the sixth annual Independence Day Parade in Port Richmond.
Hundreds turned out on Sunday as the parade, which featured floats, dancers, traditional music, and other displays of Mexican heritage, wound its way through Port Richmond.
“It was very cultural, and I saw a lot of people, a lot of support from people,” said Alex R., a Port Richmond resident who asked that her last name not be used. ”Last year it wasn’t as crowded as it was this year."
She said it was a beautiful thing to see, considering the increase in deportations by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents around the country. “Everyone’s just united and it’s a beautiful thing to see.” 10
