BATON ROUGE, La (Louisiana First) -- September 14 marks National Food is Medicine Day, a reminder that what we eat plays a vital role in how our bodies function.

“We really want people to think of food as something that nourishes the body,” said John Alpozan, who emphasized that every meal is an opportunity to fuel health.

“You take food in multiple times per day. It feeds your entire body daily, and all the nutrients in food are needed to keep your metabolism moving in a positive direction,” Alpozan said.

Experts said changing eating habits isn’t easy. Instead of drastic shifts, small, manageable steps are encouraged.

“It’s difficult to start a really intense diet and make big changes all at once. That’s why a lot of people quit,” said Joe Coussan.
