PORTLAND, Maine — Excitement grew as hugs, handshakes, and high-fives were exchanged as people gathered in front of the stage for the recovery countdown at this year's Rally 4 Recovery event in Portland.

One of the first to join was Judy, who has been in recovery for 43 years, "I can't say enough for recovery."

She and many others gathered in Payson Park on Sunday for the 12th Rally 4 Recovery, organized by Portland Recovery Community Center . Executive Director Nicole Proctor says the event draws 400-500 people each year.

"It's a great place to come down and pick up some of those resources," Proctor said.

One of those resources present was Pine Tree Recovery Center . Co-founder Lenny Smith says it took him multiple tries to become sober.
