BOARDMAN — The air was filled with the smell of french fries and elephant ears, as the occasional cheer would echo in the front half of the Boardman High School campus.

On Saturday, over 100 schools made their way to Boardman from Toledo to Virginia for the 40th Spartan Invitational cross country meet.

Two local teams were among programs that had solid performances.

Boardman saw both its boys and girls programs finish in the top-five finishers in the Division II races, and Maplewood had top-10 finishes from its boys and girls in the Division III competitions.

Hathaway Brown easily won the Division II girls race. But Boardman’s girls only finished three points behind runner-up Rocky River (136).

On the boys end of the D-II race, Lexington (Va.) took care of business and won with 74 poi
