Police have charged a driver accused of fatally hitting seven geese over the summer.
The driver has been charged with seven counts of animal cruelty in addition to violations of the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife regulations, the Spotswood Police Department said in a Friday statement. The driver will also face multiple motor vehicle violations.
Police did not publicize the person’s identity.
A driver hit the birds at 6:45 p.m. on July 14 on Devoe Avenue near Devoe Lake. When officers arrived, the driver had already left the area, authorities said. Investigators worked for nearly two months to identify a suspect.
Geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and any intentional harm caused to them may be a violation of both state and federal regulations.
