Palmer Township police have charged a man they’re calling the “Gruver bomber” with setting off homemade bombs in the vicinity of Gruver Avenue sporadically over the past several months.

Police say “several investigative methods” and tips from the public led them to Ronald Erney of Upper Macungie Township. Erney turned 58 on Monday.

He is in Northampton County Prison after failing to post $50,000 bail.

A voicemail left at Erney’s home wasn’t returned. No defense attorney was listed for his case.

Police raided Erney’s home on Friday and found chemicals, fuses, cardboard tubing, PVC tubing, and projectiles, all of which can be used to make explosives, according to a news release from the Palmer Township Police Department.
