A man has died after being struck by a falling tree branch in Revoe Park, Blackpool. The incident occurred amid gale-force winds, with the Met Office warning of gusts reaching up to 70mph in exposed areas. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 5am on Monday.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was reportedly living in a tent in the park. A local dog walker noted that he had been camping in one of two tents set up in the area for several days. The walker described the scene, stating that the branch had completely "crushed" a small tent and had nearly fallen on a larger tent occupied by a homeless couple.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police confirmed that they received a call at 4.55am regarding the incident. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the man unresponsive. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet confirmed whether the man was homeless, but they are working to trace his next of kin. The spokesperson added, "The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be passed in due course to HM Coroner."
This tragic event coincides with severe weather conditions affecting much of west and southwest England and Wales. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning starting at 8pm on Sunday, which is expected to remain in effect until 6pm on Monday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as strong winds persist.
