Meryl Streep and Martin Short don’t even have to appear in public together to capture the hearts of America. At the 77th Emmy Awards , Lead Actor in a Comedy nominee Short sat with his Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, seemingly attending stag. But just because Streep wasn’t there in person doesn’t mean she wasn’t there digitally. At one point during the night, a swooping camera captured Gomez leaning over to see what Short is doing on his phone. She smiles and turns to her fiancé, Benny Blanco, and says (according to lip-reading experts), “He’s texting Meryl.” Texting! Meryl Streep! Can you imagine? What’s he telling her? Probably that Nate Bargatze’s money bit isn’t working and that they should have let Jiminy Glick host.
