GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - An 11-year-old girl could face criminal charges after Gainesville Police Department officers say she threatened to commit a school shooting.

Officials say the girl sent messages to another student threatening to shoot the victim and shoot up Howard Bishop Middle School. Officers confirmed the messages were hers with phone records.

The girl told officers the threat was intended as a prank. Charges are pending.

An increased law enforcement presence was at the school on Monday as a precaution.
