Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will deliver a speech Tuesday outlining how to “protect and defend Michigan’s economy” amid economic uncertainty she attributes to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The speech is expected to be a push to state lawmakers who are risking a government shutdown in two weeks if they can’t agree on a spending plan for 2025-2026.

“Federal tariffs are driving economic uncertainty, leading to massive job loss, instability in our nation’s manufacturing sector and concerning signs for our economic future,” Whitmer said. “Elected leaders need to set aside politics, do our jobs to protect and defend our constituents and work together so we can create a bright future for every American.
