(QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The SC Highway Patrol is sending out a strong message this week: Move over when you see emergency vehicles on the side of the road, or be ready to pay the price.

The warning comes as part of "Operation Keep Us Safe," a new week-long crackdown happening across all 46 counties in South Carolina. The overall goal is to enforce a law that’s been on the books since 1996, but often ignored, the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and shift lanes when they see flashing lights from emergency vehicles.

This renewed effort follows several close calls and one tragic loss. In June, two troopers were nearly hit during routine traffic stops. Then, in August, Trooper First Class Dennis Ricks was struck by a truck in Orangeburg County. He died from his injuries days l
