Technically, it is a metatarsophalangeal joint sprain.

In simpler terms, turf toe is a sprain of the connective tissue between your big toe and your foot.
If that toe bends too far back, those ligaments and tendons can stretch or even tear.
It was named turf toe because it became so common for football players on artificial turf.
Most cases can be treated with rest, but in more extreme cases, surgery may be required.
And it’s important to make sure it is treated.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, untreated turf toe can lead to extreme pain and long-term stiffness in the joint:
