A 36-year-old man was struck and killed by an SUV early Monday in Barnegat after falling off the electric skateboard he had been riding, officials said.

The 41-year-old driver called Barnegat police at about 1 a.m. to report he had struck a man lying on West Bay Avenue near Sandpiper Road, police said in a statement.

Emergency responders pronounced the skateboarder dead at the scene. He has not been identified.

The driver of the SUV is not facing charges.

Police closed the road for more than three hours as they investigated.
